A Mesa company has come up with a high-performance golf ball that is environmentally friendly.
Dane Platt and William Carey of Dixon Golf launched Dixon Golf Earth last winter. The high-performance golf ball is free of heavy metals that are found in other balls. In addition, the company encourages golfers to recycle used golf balls by offering an incentive. The brand, once a subsidiary of DW Sports Group, became a separate company who trade in a scuffed up Dixon ball receive a $1 ball-for-ball credit to purchase new ones. They can receive a 50-cent credit for trading in other brands. "The whole point of this is to bring them in and we'll learn how to recycle them. We take them and we grind them up and find other uses with other products and develop new uses," Carey said. Some examples are artificial turf and playground equipment, he said.
Since the rebate started, the company has received 50,000 used golf balls. The concept was designed to help reduce the number of discarded used golf balls. Carey says an estimated 200 to 300 million golf balls are thrown away in the United States yearly.
What are other products?
Dixon Wind, a long distance golf ball and hats made of recycled plastic bottles. This winter the company plans to sell golf shirts made out of bamboo, and introduce Dixon Fire, another high-performance golf ball. Golf shirts made out of recycled plastic bottles will be added next year to the Dixon Golf apparel collection, Carey said.
How much does a sleeve cost?
A sleeve of balls ranges from $25-$40, depending on the retailer that sells them. The golf ball is said to be faster than leading competitors with 392 dimples for accurate, longer distance shots.
What's next?
Carey said the company's research and development team is looking at creating a putter made out of golf balls.
Where can I buy it?
Dixon balls are sold at 11 retailers in Arizona as well as in 15 countries. Golfers can recycle old golf balls at Dixon Golf recycling centers at stores where the brand is sold.
